Antique 19th C RARE Stoneware Jug Crock Merchant JOHN MATTHEWS NEW YORK #14. For your consideration is a RARE American jug / crock.Salt glazed stoneware vessel with one separately applied handle. Clearly impressed 5-lines mark upfront in washed underglaze cobalt blue, reading "FINE EXTRACTS & SIRUPS / FROM THE FIRM OF / JOHN MATTHEWS / 1st AVE 26th & 27th STS / NEW YORK". This is an emblematic merchant jug made for the above referenced company. John Matthews (18081870) was known as the "The Soda Fountain King". He is credited with the development of a device to carbonate soft drinks and the inventor of the first countertop soda fountain.
Jugs like this contained syrups for carbonated drinks. A wonderful scarce 1 gallon jug, great historical Americana.
